Query Myopia

Source: behance.net via Periain on Pinterest

To date, I have sent out XXX queries. I will not tell the true number, but from reading blogs and chatting it up with (aspiring) writers I get the sense that it is more than average.

So I have to ask myself, am I just not getting it? Sending out queries too soon? When I've written dozens and revised just as many, do I give it up? Call in the Shark? Is the premise just not interesting? Do I put off some kind of off-putting vibe in my writing? I want to pinpoint the issue and correct it and write the query that will knock it out of the park, yanno?

After all this time, when I sit down and open the draft of a given query, sometimes I'm not even sure what I'm looking at. The words and punctuation and present tense and concision and detail all blur.

What gives? What do I do?

Patience. The answer is, I think, I believe, always, patience. (Biggened just in case you have myopia like me.)

So I saddle  up on Patience and go back to my resources:

  • Nathan Bransford - the basics, straightforward and accessible.
  • Query Shark - there are hundreds of real life queries here, picked apart with critique.
  • Author Elana Johnson - She possibly deviates from the norm (your query should only be 250 words max- wha?) but then maybe your manuscript does too or the agent...so it is worth a read. I think.
  • Miss Snark's First Victim - Loads on writing in general, contests and querying.

Although there are rules, etiquette, expectations and do and don't's to writing a query, there is an enormous amount of room for creativity. I keep telling myself the query is in there, in my head, waiting to be written.

Which brings me to patience's twin:

Positivity. After a deluge of rejections, "We're sorry you're work isn't quite right for us, we apologize for this form letter, but will have to pass on your manuscript at this time..." I have to tell myself to stick with it, to chipper up and continue to refine, learn and believe that at some point the stars will align and I will write the query that captivates the perfect agent for me...and so will you. Uh, unless of course you're reading this and that has already happened or...you have no use for an agent.

But if you are a querying writer, please share what has worked for you and any resources you have and maybe a good opthamologist.

Those Kinds of Days

This weekend was one of those hurry up and get everything done and then don't lift a finger kinds of a couple of days.

It was all rush from place to place, event to event and then sit back and enjoy the simple splendor of a cold evening spent curled up by the fire.

It was stretching in downward dog and reading The Lord of the Rings with my littles (though really not so little.)

It was phones calls, texts and emails, and crossing off lists and strumming the ukulele.

It was catching up with friends and twisting homemade pretzels.

It was folding the clothes, "window shopping" for clothes, swimming laps and watching baskets bounce.

It was one of those weekends when we just live life with sniffles and laughter, a big pot of soup and movies, and the realization that everything is just as it should be.

Sugar Free Valentine's Treats

I am sugar free for the first candy-based holiday of the year: Valentine's Day. So that means no chocolate, no candy hearts, no decadent cakes. My hubs thinks he's getting off easy, but here are some ideas to make Valentine's Day sweet, without the sugar.

1.) Strawberries and homemade whipped cream (no added sugar- or cashew cream if you're dairy free like that.)

2.) Using a mini-heart cookie cutter carefully slice hearts out of carrots, parsnips, beets, cucumber and serve with your favorite dip or hummus.

3.) Craft up these adorable puffy heart wands. And work your magic cupid-style.

4.) Enjoy some fresh flowers

5.)...Or try aromatherapy.

6.) Be inspired. Be creative. Make art.

7.) Something naughty or nice to wear.

8.) Something with a little sparkle.

9.) A back massage- while watching a movie or fancy-like at a spa with orchids and chime-y music.

10.) And if nothing else, always remember this:

Happy Valentine's Day-  if you have sugar free ideas, please share.

Blogs in Real Life

Here are three favorites this week from around the blogosphere that went from the virtual world of, "Oh, I'd sure like to try that someday," to "I'm totally doin' this!"

1. A heart garland- from Local Sugar Hawaii. A needle, thread, and fancy paper clippings. How about that!?!

Fun Paper!

Close up!
2. This hearty dish from Oh She Glows is the kind of winter sustenance that puts hair on your chest. Not that I need that, but just sayin'. Mine came out a bit like a soup, but almost smokey and thick. Yum-o!

3. A deep moisture deficit courtesy of winter brought on a luxurious moment using these, some of my fave products from Love & Toast...lips, hands, legs...you know the deal.

Three Things....and No Guilt

Three things I did for myself this week without guilt:

When life has you harried and children need you to look at their homework and the animals need food and water, and dinner needs to be made, and lunch and breakfast, and there are deadlines and then there's that pile of bills and don't forget the mail, where there are bound to be more, and there's that phone call to return, but you're avoiding it and darn it the laundry is overflowing and books are due back at the library and these are just the little things...phew.

Sometimes our cups are brimming, overflowing, spilling all over the counter, or car or right down the front of our freshly pressed, though not so clean, blouse...okay, I don't think I even own a blouse, but you get my meaning. Well it all feels so full and yet there's always room for more you see. And, somehow we know that the cup needs to be refilled, maybe with some other kind of substance. Maybe something a bit more nourishing than the busywork of daily life.

When I have that thirst for something other than mopped floors, stamped envelopes and somehow getting the glue out of the glue container that seems to have sealed itself shut...well here are three things I turned to...and I don't feel guilty at all...What do you do to indulge yourself?

I read this:

I made these for the Super Bowl and I won the trophy for MVP my family loved them so much, but I resisted sugar's siren call. Why? Read here.

And turned to this:
