NA Scavenger Hunt

Welcome to the New Adult Scavenger Hunt

The NA Scavenger Hunt is similar to YASH (if you've been hanging around the blog you'll remember it from a couple weeks ago). NewASH is a biannual event to give readers a chance to receive bonus material from their favorite authors, find new books, and have the opportunity to win great prizes, including what else?

It works like this: there are two teams (right now you're on TEAM GREEN). Each participating author leaves a numerical clue. Add up the clues and enter to win the grand prize!

Find the complete details, rules, and frequently asked questions here

Remember, the game goes lightning fast: 72 hours to be exact.

What are you waiting for?
Go! Go! Go.

I'm hosting Kate Thomas, author of the

Kate Thomas, is the author of the Equilibrium Series, a five-book supernatural new adult series & Resounding, an eight-book supernatural adult series scheduled to release starting the fall of 2015.

She is a full time author entrepreneur, writing under multiple pen names and ghost writing on occasion. With more ideas than one person should be allowed, she is blessed to have a muse that doesn’t seem to take a vacation and more energy that one might consider healthy.

She writes under L.A. Starkey for her Young Adult and Middle Grade books.

Find out more at Kate's Website.

And connect with her here:

There’s something strange about David, something that goes beyond the way he makes Ellie feel. He’s wealthy, poised, and a complete enigma. With nothing to lose but her heart, Ellie goes in search of the truth—a search that leads her down an eye-opening path that reveals secrets about the world she thought she knew.

The world’s order is held in careful balance, the essence of good and evil tilting the scale. When the fabric of reality is stripped away, Ellie is forced to make a decision to follow the path David’s constructed before her or simply walk away. The Core is missing and someone must step up and stand between the light and darkness, holding each back and maintaining equilibrium.

Literary Halloween Costumes

Last Halloween, for the first time in ages, I dressed up. I was Princess Leia. I WISH I had a photo. This year, the word nerd that I am, I'm dressing up as...

Vitamin W...

Wait for it...

Vitamin Write.

I know, I'm a mega dork. I'll post pictures when I get 'em.

If you haven't pulled out your witch hat or sewn a kracken with functional tentacle action, click over to my Bookish Halloween Costume Ideas Pinterest Board for inspiration from the world of fiction.

If you already know what you're dressing up as, please share in the comments below.

Asks & Answers #3

Welcome to the third installment of Asks and Answers by none other than yours truly. Readers have sent me lovely notes and have asked some questions so I figured instead of repeating myself, I'd answer them in this format. The formula is quite simple:

readers ask questions + my answers = a blog post

If you missed or are interested in the first two, check them out here and here

Away we go!

What do you recommend for aspiring writers:

William Wordsworth said it best: "Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart." (Another favorite quote!)

Also, read. Alot. Read books by your favorite authors and genres and read outside of what you may think you like or write. Read in the bathtub (*electronic readers not recommended, ahem), before bed, first thing in the morning, between classes, on public transport, whenever you have a moment. Read, read, and read some more!

Also, here are some ideas I shared in an interview with Cheyanne Young

Who is your favorite literary character?

It's hard to pick one, so instead I'll answer with a few. I know, I'm sorry! It's just so hard to choose! The characters I adore are often ones I find myself rooting for and/or those who stick with me long after I close the pages of the book. Characters that come to mind are Anne Shirley and Hermione Granger. They're both strong, smart, and feisty females whose story arcs are compelling.

Same desk. New space. Also, now I have a swivel chair! Woohoo!

Where do you write?

Command central is smack dab in my living room. I used to have an office: private, scenic view, did I mention private? As in quiet, no interruptions or distractions? Suffice it say, I moved and now my lovely, custom desk is part of the living space...but the good news is, I've learned how to write amidst chaos, which is a decent skill.

What inspires your ideas?

Life. You. Me. Usually the seed of an idea comes to me, influenced by something I've been thinking about or recently witnessed or experienced. Then if the seed starts to sprout, )that is little shoots of related concepts, characters, settings, etc. take shape,) then I'm off and outlining.

What's your favorite band?

This is off-the-wall hard to answer. My iTunes catalog is spread across two computers, but most often on rotation is Franz Ferdinand, Fiona Apple, and Vampire Weekend. Here are a few playlists from writing projects.

I can't say with absolute certainty that I have a single favorite song. I. Just. Can't. Do. It. But I don't want to leave you hanging either. Music, I believe, really can provide the soundtracks to our lives and there have been certain times that I've listened to a song over and over during a period of joy or sadness. The words, the tune, the voice, it all stuck with me. Here are three songs from the last three decades. Ha ha. I've so just dated myself!

Liz Phair's > White Chocolate Space Egg.

Jane's Addiction > To Match the Sun

Franz Ferdinand > Stand on the Horizon

Alrighty, there you have it. You asked. I answered. If you have other questions, writing related or otherwise, please leave them in the comments below, and I will do my best. Also, I'd love to know your faves: music, songs, books, cats, boots? Do tell!

YA Scavenger Hunt 2015

Welcome to the YA Scavenger Hunt!

My name is Deirdre Riordan Hall & I'm the author of SUGAR. I'm your host for this stop on the YA Scavenger Hunt and right now I'm playing for the ORANGE TEAM. Which is really fitting since it's the month of orange: pumpkins, cinnamon (kinda), and autumn leaves! As many of you know I love summer, but fall comes up second. It's a potent time of reflection, and I always feel like there's a crackle of magic in the air at this time of year. Which  is fitting because yesterday I finished the first draft of a YA fantasy, and yes, there's magic involved. But that should be no surprise because I really believe there's a bit of that in all of us.

So, what is the YA Scavenger Hunt?

This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors...and a chance to win some awesome prizes! During this hunt, you'll have access to exclusive content from each participating author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize--one lucky winner will receive one signed book from each author on the hunt on TEAM ORANGE!

But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online for 72 hours! That's from noon PST Thursday October 1 through noon PST Sunday October 4th.

How do I play?

Go to the YA Scavenger Hunt page to find out all about the hunt. There are EIGHT contests going on simultaneously, and you can enter one or all. I am a part of the ORANGE TEAM. There are seven other teams increasing your changes to win a whole different set of signed books!

If you'd like to find out more about the hunt, see links to all the authors participating, and see the full list of prizes up for grabs, please visit the YA Scavenger Hunt page.

Win all these prizes!

How does the YA Scavenger Hunt work?

Directions: Below, you'll notice that I've listed my favorite number. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the ORANGE TEAM, and then add them up (don't worry, you can use a calculator!).

Entry Form: Once you've added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian's permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by Sunday, October 4th at noon Pacific time. (Here's a time calculator to find out when that is.) Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

Okay, ready to get to the fun stuff? Here we go!

I'm hosting the lovely Vanessa Barger
Author of SUPER FREAK
Release date Tuesday, October 13th.

Vanessa Barger was born in West Virginia, and through several moves ended up spending the majority of her life in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is a graduate of George Mason University and Old Dominion University, and has degrees in Graphic Design, a minor in Medieval and Renaissance Literature, and a Masters in Technology Education. She has had articles published in Altered Arts Magazine, has had some artwork displayed in galleries in Ohio and online, and currently teaches engineering, practical physics, drafting and other technological things to high school students in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. She is a member of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators), the Virginia Writer's Club, and the Hampton Roads Writers. When not writing or teaching, she’s a bookaholic, movie fanatic, and loves to travel. She is married to a fabulous man, and has one cat, who believes Vanessa lives only to open cat food cans, and can often be found baking when she should be editing.

Find out more information by checking out the Vanessa's website and find her on social media.

About Super Freak

Thirteen-year-old Caroline is a freak. Her parents have uprooted her to a town full of Supernaturals. You'd think she'd be thrilled. But, with someone without a magical bone in her body, this daughter of tree sprites feels like even more of an outcast than she has ever before.

To make matters worse, her new home is cursed. But when Caroline takes to investigating the mysterious and strange happenings of Harridan House, her BFF goes missing. Seems someone doesn't want Caroline sticking her non-magical nose where it most certainly does not belong. Determined to prove herself, Caroline uncovers a plot to destroy her new hometown.

Undeterred, Caroline can't give up. But what's a human without magical powers to do? Caroline better figure it out fast, before she loses everything she has ever loved and the whispers she's heard all her life prove true: Caroline is a useless superfreak.

Exclusive Content

I thought for the YA Scavenger Hunt, I’d let you all in on the playlist I used while writing SUPER FREAK. My musical tastes are pretty open, just like Caro’s – her favorites range from bagpipes to rock! So check out this playlist and try to picture which song matches what scene!

4. Breath of Life – Florence and the Machine
5. Just A Cloud Away – Pharrell Williams
6. Budapest – George Ezra
7. Go The Distance – Roger Bart (From “Hercules”)
8. Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond (You knew this would be here, right?)
9. Witchcraft – Frank Sinatra
10. Geronimo – Sheppard
11. Last Midnight – Meryl Streep (from “Into the Woods”)
12. Mirror Haus – Lindsey Sterling (Most of her Shatter Me CD was played at some point!)

How to Continue?

To continue the hunt, you need to check out the next author: Carly Anne West
